Symphony Band Auditions

Symphony Band Basic Requirements for Class

The music is more challenging, thus you will need to practice more!
You are required to take 30 minute private lessons weekly (at BHS). Cost is usually around $20-$25. (not covered by school)
Marching Band is a requirement (unless you are a Varsity Football player, or has a disability)
In the winter months, there may be evening rehearsals once a week that will be required.

Symphony Band Audition Requirements

Part 1: Scales
Major Scales:
C
F
Bb
Eb
Ab
Db
Chromatic scale (one octave up and down)

Part 2: YOUR Music Selections (start working on now!)
*see Mr. Taylor/Mr. Campbell OR your lesson teacher for music, or band website!

A piece (or part of a piece) of music that demonstrates your technical skill. (something faster)
A piece (or part of a piece) of music that demonstrates your musicality skills and beauty of sound/tone. (Something Slower)

Part 3: Given music and sight reading (given to you by Mr. Taylor)

You will be given a piece or excerpts (several small sections of pieces) by Mr. Taylor exactly one week before your audition day of which you will have to learn and perform to the best of your ability. (assesses how much you can learn in that one week time)
You will be given a piece to sight read on the day of audition. (this is easy!)

Optional Audition Music

1.) Some instruments have 2 selections that you MUST play. Usually a slower piece and a faster piece.

2.) Baritone BC should use the trombone music and Baritone TC should use the trumpet music.

3.) Percussion be sure to read requirements listed before your music. If you have questions or are unsure, please email us!
